The latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise will be heavily inspired by actual events from the not-so-distant past and involving some modern-day politics, which caused something of a political fight on social media these last two days.
Wow, for a game that’s not even out yet, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War sure has been stirring the pot. First, it was blatantly leaked by Doritos’ packaging, then a teaser trailer dropped, featuring real-life scenes of an interview with famous KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov. Here’s a video for context:
So, what’s the problem? While the teaser seems to be very well-received (judging by the number of likes), at least two cliques are very upset by it.
First, it’s the “normal” gamers, who don’t want politics in their game. While this statement is respectable in principle, the CoD titles have a long history of making statements on subjects like war crimes and terrorism and have always drew some inspiration from actual historic events. This time though, they seem to have come dangerously close to crossing a line, by including actual events from a relatively recent point in time, and, since the USA and the USSR were involved with it, one that affects many Call of Duty players directly.
The second choir of displeased voices comes from self-proclaimed Marxist Twitter users with heavy Left-leaning views, who disagree with the use of KGB propaganda and the supposed unfair tone of the title, depicting America as the good guy (since, you know, America actually won the Cold War).
It is highly likely that both sides are over-reacting due to the very scarce details we are being given at this point. Much more news about the new CoD title will be released in just a few days, so we better save our outrage for later.
