Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone collectively made nearly $2 bllion in 2020, according to a recent report by SuperData. The huge success of the gaming monolith spells a perfect excuse for the continuation of Call of Duty’s new hybrid model between base-game and free-to-play Battle Royale.
Season 1 is about half-way over now, with speculation already picking up regarding what could be in store for Season 2, before the mid-season patch is even live. Well, that’s no bloody surprise! In 2020, Activision made nearly $2 billion in revenue just off Modern Warfare and Warzone alone. That’s a whole lot of dough...
Wow! What a number! $1.913 billion to be precise, so not quite $2 billion. But bloody close, as you can plainly see. These numbers are incredible, and we would speculate that perhaps this huge success is at least partially due to the Covid-19 crisis forcing us all indoors.
We ain’t complaining, though: Warzone has been absolutely fantastic since it launched in March of 2020! Modern Warfare was also a huge hit, with a fantastic remake of the classic original (though Modern Warfare 2’s remaster didn’t quite hold up to scratch). But still... That's a LOT of money!
This revenue figure includes sales of the base Modern Warfare, along with all sales of Warzone’s 6-seasons, microtransactions and game upgrades. This is a fantastic lesson for those of you out there asking: “what’s with all these bulls**t stores in my games?” Well, the numbers speak for themselves.
That might not make it any less annoying for players who want to just enjoy their games in peace, but you can understand why a company like Activision pushes season passes and microtransactions so hard! It was only a little over a month between Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s base-game release and the launch of Season 1 – barely enough time to let the base-game sink in!
What’s even more shocking than these sales numbers is that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War only launched on November 13, 2020, and it had already made a whopping $678 million in revenue by mid-December. What an unbelievable stat! We could even see the numbers beat out 2020 in 2021, if Activision keep going the way they’re going.

One thing’s for certain, and has been certain for a while now: Call of Duty is certainly not dead! A couple years back, with games like Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare and World War II, there was speculation that perhaps Call of Duty’s days were stagnating, just as Battlefield’s has. But boy, oh boy, were we wrong!
