Call of Duty WW2: Vanguard Confirmed for 2021

Recent rumors suggesting that Call of Duty 2021 will return to a World War 2 setting have been in part verified, and thus confirmed, by Eurogamer. The leaks reported by Modern Warzone last week suggest that this year's CoD will be called Call of Duty WW2: Vanguard. Could this be true?

Well, it certainly seems that way. Perhaps a little uncreative, isn't it? Well, Sledgehammer Games already released a foray into World War 2 back in 2017, with the release of Call of Duty WW2. Unsurprising? Yes. Unexciting? Yes. Could it still be good? Yes.

It has been more-or-less confirmed that Sledgehammer Games are the gurus behind 2021's Call of Duty game, and that's not a bad thing. Perhaps it will be better than Black Ops Cold War, but that wouldn't be hard, to be honest. The only problem is: World War 2 again, really?

Last week, Twitter leaker ModernWarzone suggested that CoD 2021 could be named Call of Duty WW2: Vanguard, claiming that was the game's codename. These reports have now been more or less confirmed by Eurogamer.

The original leak claimed that CoD 2021 would be set in an alternate timeline, where 1945 was not the final year of World War 2. This leak has now been questioned by Eurogamer, who reported the following:

Eurogamer understands this detail isn't quite right, [but that] Vanguard has a traditional WW2 setting.

Well, that's pretty interesting. We hope it's wrong, to be honest, but the fact is that Eurogamer has now accurately verified new CoD game leaks five years in a row. The alternate history setting would have been a far more interesting idea for a game, but it looks like we might have to settle for another WW2 snooze-fest. At least it isn't BOCW, though?

When is the Call of Duty WW2: Vanguard Release Date?

Call of Duty WW2: Vanguard, or CoD 2021, will be released in the fourth quarter of 2021's calendar year. That means either in October or November. Call of Duty games never come out in December, so we can probably rule that out. We also want to stress: Call of Duty WW2: Vanguard is not necessarily going to be the name of CoD 2021. It just seems pretty likely at this stage!

Call of Duty WW2: Vanguard would only be the second World War 2 CoD title to come out in the last decade, the other also having been developed by Sledgehammer Games, back in 2017. That was a decent game, so we could be in for a quality game, but it is yet to be known how a game with WW2 weapons would integrate with Warzone... and we all know how it went with Black Ops Cold War.
