Call of Duty: Vanguard is only two short months away, and the beta is coming even sooner. But hold on, when is CoD: Vanguard set you might be asking. There were certainly a lot of bizarre rumors that surrounded the game's development, so here's a quick rundown of Vanguard's actual story for you. When Call of Duty: Vanguard was still 'in the dark' a few months ago, nobody was certain when the game was set. We all thought WWII or thereabouts, but bizarre claims were made that the game would see us jumping through history, or maybe taking on an alternative timeline. Well, luckily, it seems far more grounded than that.
When Is Call of Duty: Vanguard Set?
Call of Duty: Vanguard is set during World War 2, and in all four theaters of war, but unlike an ordinary WWII game, you will play as the very first special forces units. As the devs describe it:
Witness the origins of Special Forces as you play a pivotal role and change the face of history, forming Task Force One in a gripping Campaign across four major theaters of war.
From the various clips we've seen, it looks as though they will be featuring some of the War's biggest actual battles and will be trying to portray them in a manner that is at least somewhat reflective of the actual history.

Who Do You Play As In Call of Duty: Vanguard?
You play as each of the following characters in the campaign:
- Private Lucas Riggs, 20th Battalion, Australian 9th Infantry Division, British Eighth Army.
- Sergeant Arthur Kingsley of the 9th Parachute Battalion, British Army.
- Lieutenant Wade Jackson, Scouting Squadron Six, United States Navy.
- Lieutenant Polina Petrova of the 138th Rifle Division, Red Army.
You won't play as an axis-aligned character in the campaign, but we assume you will be able to in multiplayer. That being said, we can't count on them doing this.
The cosmetics for such characters would be very divisive; what skins can they tastefully offer for German or Japanese soldiers from this period? Could that lead to glorification? We'll update you as soon as we know Activision Blizzard's plans in this regard.
