Back in October Valve revealed that they plan to fight toxicity and bad behavior in Dota 2 with an Overwatch system. During the BTS Pro Series Season 4, BTS leaked what it might look like.

Cheating and bad behavior have always been a problem in online games. Valve are known for dealing with the former in waves as thousands of cheaters get banned on a monthly basis. CS:GO, arguably the most popular shooter in the world has a system that allows players to report and review suspicious activity. This system goes by the name of Overwatch (not to be confused with Blizzard’s game).

Overwatch is an in-game replay review system that lets the CS:GO community regulate itself by allowing qualified and experienced members of the community, called 'Investigators' to review reports of disruptive behavior, determine whether those reports are valid, and apply temporary bans if appropriate.

Everyone can report players using the system, but only players that meet certain criteria will be able to review the evidence and give a verdict.

Back in October, Valve hinted that the same system will be coming in Dota 2. Fans were thrilled by the news but no release date was announced.

In terms of toxicity and game ruining behaviors from players, we are working on a new Overwatch style system, similar in some ways to that of CS:GO. We aren’t ready to share more information about this yet, but we will as soon as we are able. We are hoping to get this in the game as soon as possible.

During the BTS Pro Series Season 4, Beyond the Summit accidentally revealed what the new system might look like.

By the looks of it, players will have the option to report a player for:

  • cheating
  • feeding
  • griefing
  • suspicious activity

It’s still unclear when the Overwatch system will be officially rolled out but considering it’s already in the client, we expect it to be soon.

What do you think about the Overwatch system in Dota 2? Will it be a good addition, or will it spread total chaos? Share your thoughts on Facebook or our Discord server!
