Dota 2 Item Guide: Battle Fury
Let's take a quick look at Battle Fury:
- Patch created: Patch 4.0 (really long ago)
- Total cost: 4130 gold
- Grants: +7.5 Health Regeneration, +3.25 Mana Regeneration, +55 Attack Damage, increases attack damage against non-hero units by 18 for melee heroes, and 6 for ranged
- Active: Chop Tree - Destroy a target tree.
- Passive: Cleave - Deals 70% of attack damage as physical damage in a cone up to 650 around the target. Deals 50% against creeps. (Melee Only)
Battle Fury is one of the oldest items in the game. It dates back to 2004, years before the release of Dota 2. Over the years it has seen numerous changes but the core concept remained the same - it gives you damage, regeneration, and a cleave. In theory, it's the best item to accelerate your farm and that's why we see it so often in pro matches.
In terms of gold cost, Battle Fury is on the higher end for an early game item. Despite that, the price on individual components is low with the most expensive one being 1350 gold. This makes it a tempting offer in almost every game where your carry wants to farm efficiently. There's one key factor though, the earlier you get it the better.
When Should You Buy Battle Fury?
Battle Fury is great on heroes with high mobility that can clear neutral camps with blazing speed. Purchasing Battle Fury makes them even faster, some great examples are:
- Anti-Mage
- Phantom Assassin
- Ember Spirit
- Monkey King
- Juggernaut
- Faceless Void
These heroes will almost always get a Battle Fury if their laning phase went well. Aside from making you farm faster Battle Fury doesn't offer anything significant benefit except cutting trees (counters Nature's Prophet's Sprout). Then again the cleave passive is particularly useful versus huge swarms of enemy units and specifically illusions.
What's Good Timing for Battle Fury?
Generally speaking, the earlier you get it, the better. While in pro matches you'll sometimes see it purchased on the 10-minute mark that's borderline impossible in most pubs. Just make sure you get it before minute 20, because the enemy team might be in your base by then.
Downsides of Battle Fury
As mentioned above, Battle Fury is great in the early stages as it'll increase your farming efficiency and give you much-needed sustain. Sadly, BF doesn't give you any extra stats like health or strength which makes the carrier of the item a glass cannon. It's easy to kill any hero with a naked Battle Fury for the first 5-10 minutes after they get it.
You have to realize that the enemy team will do everything to delay your Battle Fury and once you get it you'll become even more of a target. Ask your support to place wards or do it yourself but make sure you have enough vision. Being dead for a minute will set you back a lot.
Alternatives to Battle Fury
If you're not getting a Battle Fury to farm then what? There are a couple of options but they're almost always worse.
- Maelstrom - cheaper but gives you less damage and the proc is based on chance while BF's cleave is on every hit.
- Radiance - more expensive than Battle Fury but can actually give you the edge in teamfights due to the area of effect damage and blind.
- Hand of Midas - cheaper but takes some time to make up for the initial cost. It gives you no advantage in teamfights and will be obsolete in the late game.
Battle Fury is the optimal choice in most cases but there are still some scenarios where one of these items makes sense. If your line up wants to take fights early and the carry is something that also wants to fight then feel free to skip Battle Fury. You won't see it on heroes like Slark, Terrorblade, Spectre and others because it's just good enough on them. Slark wants to fight and kill heroes, Terrorblade needs stats to farm faster, and Spectre usually goes for Radiance.
