It’s time for another Dota 2 Item Guide! This time we take a look at the recently added Gleipnir. Is it worth the cost and when should you buy it?
If you're interested in more item guides check out some of the previous ones - Blade Mail, Eul's Scepter of Divinity, Abyssal Blade, Manta Style, Spirit Vessel, and Hand of Midas. In today's edition, we'll take a look at Gleipnir. A potential upgrade to Rod of Atos and Maelstrom, two very different items.
Gleipnir
A quick glimpse at Gleipnir's stats:
- Patch created: 7.28
- Total cost: 6150 gold
- Provides:+30 Damage, +20 Intelligence, +12 Strength and +12 Agility.
- Passive: Chain Lightning - Grants a 30% chance on attack to release a bolt of electricity that leaps between 4 targets within a 650 radius dealing 160 magical damage to each target. The Lightning proc pierces evasion.
- Active: Eternal Chains - Targets a 450 AoE, releasing a lightning strike onto each enemy unit, ensnaring them for 2 seconds, and dealing a chain lightning damage proc for 220 damage. Cast Range: 1100. Manacost: 200. Cooldown: 18 seconds.
In order to get Gleipnir, you’ll have to combine Maelstrom, Rod of Atos, and a 700 gold recipe. That might seem like a lot of gold but the most expensive item is a Mithril Hammer for 1600. This makes purchasing the item rather easy.
Gleipnir is a natural upgrade for any hero that already utilizes Rod of Atos. It makes the root AoE causes damage. But what heroes go for Maelstrom?
Gleipnir vs Mjollnir
That was probably the first question everyone had once Gleipnir was introduced into the game. Why have another upgrade for Maelstrom? Mjollnir is clearly the item aimed for pure DPS increase. It increases attack speed and leaps to not four but twelve targets! So what’s Gleipnir’s role? It’s definitely crowd control. The active is basically a shorter Treant Protector’s Overgrowth on a much lower cooldown. Gleipnir adds some extra stats to Maelstrom users and lightning proc plus damage to any hero that would Rod of Atos.
Who is it good on?
First and foremost, it feels like a really good pick on heroes that need a gap closer or ones who already have access to some sort of crowd control. Gleipnir will allow them to set up for a combo. It’s especially useful on Hoodwink as her Acorn Shot synergizes well with the passive and Bushwack is easy to land with the root.
It's good on these heroes:
- Hoodwink
- Bloodseeker
- Underlord
- Arc Warden
- Ogre Magi (can multicast it)
- Razor
- Viper
- Lina
- Pangolier
- Ember Spirit
For some of these, it’s an excellent upgrade from Atos. Bloodseeker and Lina already have great attack speed buffs. Underlord doesn’t auto-attack that much but it’s still a decent pick if you have the extra gold. Gleipnir is great and all, but due to its cost, and depending on your position, the enemy might already have a BKB. Another potential problem is the mana cost which sits at 200, so some heroes with a low mana pool might have trouble using it more than once in a teamfight.
