ESL One Germany 2020's group stage has ended, and eight teams are waiting for the start of the playoffs. Who made it this far and who got eliminated? Let's have a look.
There are a couple of big Dota 2 events in the next few weeks. The BTS DOTA Summit 13 kicked off today for the Americas and SEA, but there’s still some unfinished business in Europe. We’re talking about ESL One Germany of course. The event started on October 5 and gathered some of the best teams from Europe and the CIS. The group stage is already behind us and only eight of the sixteen teams are going further.
The Playoffs
The next stage of ESL One Germany 2020 begins tomorrow, October 23. Unlike in the group stage (which had a modified version of the Swiss system), the rules in the playoffs are what we expected. A double-elimination bracket with all series being Bo3 and the grand finals – Bo5. So, who made it to the playoffs? Here’s the full list of teams that achieved 3 victories in the groups:
- Team Secret
- OG
- Alliance
- Team Liquid
- Team Nigma
- mudgolems
- Natus Vincere
- Vikin.gg
All the big European organizations are here with the exception of Ninjas in Pyjamas. Team Secret and Alliance had a perfect score with 3 wins and 0 losses while Nigma struggled until the very end. With Kuro “KuroKy” Takhasomi missing, Nigma definitely had some issues losing to Yellow Submarine and mudgolems. The latter are one of the underdogs together with Vikin.gg.

The Teams That Couldn't Make it Further
Some teams like 5men, Ninjas in Pyjamas, and Yellow Submarine were just a victory away from qualifying for the ESL One Germany 2020 Playoffs but failed in the last series. Here are the eight teams that got eliminated:
- 5men
- Ninjas in Pyjamas
- Yellow Submarine
- Cyber Legacy
- HellRaisers
- Winstrike Team
- EXTREMUM
- Tempo Esports
ESL One Germany: The Favorites
If there’s a Dota 2 tournament and Team Secret are in it, there’s a high chance they’ll take first place. At least that’s what happened the last 8 times. Clement “Puppey” Ivanov’s squad is playing on another level and we don’t remember when was the last time they lost a series. If there’s one team that could stand up to them in ESL One Germany, it’s OG. The two-time TI winners only lost a single series to Alliance in the current event.
The games will resume tomorrow with the first two series in the playoffs:
- OG vs Natus Vincere – 17:00 CEST
- Team Secret vs Team Nigma – 20:00 CEST
A live stream will be available on the official ESL Twitch channel.
