So, Avatar is coming back in full force: The re-release of the old Avatar movie was making major bank, and Avatar 2 will probably be fire when it drops in December of this year. To keep this hype going, James Cameron will, for once, not wait a decade or more to release the next part of the series: Avatar 3 is already announced, and now Avatar 4 also has a release date now: 2026.

Avatar 4 Already Started Shooting

Although the movie is only due in 2026, and even though Aavatar 2 is not even out yet, and Avatar 3 is still more than a year away... shooting for Avatar 4 has already begun. This is seriously uncommon for James Cameron - though it is rumored that he will not direct any Avatar movies beyond Avatar 3. Avatar producer Jon Landau explained that the first act of Avatar 4 is already shot:

We’ve completed most of the first act of Avatar 4 and there were logistical reasons why we needed to do that. We’ve designed most of the whole movie for Avatar 4 but we haven’t actually filmed all of it – just the first act.

In fact, Avatar 2, 3, and 4 were - or rather are - all being developed simultaneously, and Avatar 3 is already close to being finished shooting. Each movie will introduce a new culture, while also weaving the past into it - meaning that each movie can be enjoyed on its own, but will be better in connection to the others.
