21 Jump Steet should cross over with Men in Black. That's what I think, and that's what Channing Tatum thinks. Now, how do we get Sony to agree?
Channing Tatum is back from his acting break, and is about to release the movie 'Dog', which I'm hyped for, because I have a dog, and dog-owners really are that simple. Beyond that, Channing Tatum would love to see 21 Jump Street and Men in Black cross over. In fact, he already read a script for said cross over and calls it “by and away the best third sequel to any franchise that I've ever read, in my entire life.” Yet, Sony is sitting on the script. So… what's the hold-up? Time for a headline and some analysis:
Will There Be A 21 Jump Street & Men in Black Movie?
Yes, and no. In an interview with Collider, Channing Tatum revealed that the script exists, but Sony and the producers are being c*ckblocks.
I still think it could work, I really do. And if Sony would ever really, like, I think do the hard work and figure out the producer problems that are inherent with that film, I think we can still do it. Right now, I don't know why, they're just not motivated to do it. It's a big overhead on that movie, so…
Yup, that's definitely Channing throwing some shade. If you didn't know, the crossover has been around since some Sony emails leaked in 2015, and it was meant to go by the title MIB 23. Channing Tatum straight up said that the script was so funny, he wouldn't have believed it, if he hadn't read it. So, obviously, he's a huge fan of the film, but blames the big shots for being too money-hungry to get it done.
There's [Steven] Spielberg, Neil Moritz, and Walter Parks. They're giant producers, y'know, on that. And then once everybody is kinda like, not willing to come off their fee, you end up having a producer fee that is essentially, maybe more than the actual budget on the movie.
Gotta love an actor coming off a hiatus, not giving a f***, because he's now working for passion over profit. He's not wrong, though, producer fees can be gigantic, especially on big franchises like Men in Black. Anyway… since that movie is not happening, here's what it would've been about – in the words of Chris Miller, who was originally attached to direct the movie:
It was basically the idea was that Jonah and Channing… a thing happened while they were doing their medical school adventure that got them embroiled into the world of Men in Black and they ended up teaming up to stop an alien takeover type of thing. So, it was very funny, it was very crazy, trying to sort of like manage these two franchises and not drive them both into the ground seemed like a real challenge. One of my favorite ideas is that the Men in Black… the black suits were like martial arts belts that you had to work your way up to black and that [Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum] were issued powder blue Men in Black suits.
