E3 2021 is confirmed as a digital event by the Entertainment Software Association, IGN has reported. The confirmation comes after a year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic and will follow December's game-awards as the next massive game-announcement event to go digital in 2020 and 2021.
Well, it's been a weird couple of years. E3 used to be perhaps the biggest event on the gaming calendar each year, and despite stagnation over the last half-decade, still stands as the staple event where developers, reporters, and fans can congregate to celebrate the games they love.
Our love affair with E3 came with disappointment in 2020, when the show was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, in a statement given to IGN, the ESA has confirmed that E3 will be going ahead in 2021!
It looks like we will be enjoying our yearly dose of gaming-cheese with several keynote sessions from gaming partners – as of yet unnamed – that will be holding their traditional E3 press conferences online. We can expect game developers, publishers and influencers all playing a role in the sort-of online festival that will be this year's E3.
They have also confirmed that there will be a media preview week, prior to the press conferences. Demos will then be released to the public during what would usually be the E3 week. A spokesperson for the ESA said in the statement:
"We can confirm that we are transforming the E3 experience for 2021 and will soon share exact details on how we’re bringing the global video game community together... We are having great conversations with publishers, developers, and companies across the board.”
In previous reports, the ESA announced a “reimagined” E3 2021, to be held from June 15 to June 17. It is also unclear whether Sony will be making a return to E3, after pulling out in the years prior to the Covid-19 pandemic.
