Idris Elba has just announced on Twitter that he will be joining the Sonic franchise. He's going to play Knuckles in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog sequel. For those who can't remember, Knuckles is one of the good guys - the red one that was something of a 'bad-boy'. Details below.
Did you watch Sonic as a kid? Surely you caught an episode or two. Maybe you're still a fan, and you caught the recent live-action film. Either way, you'll probably remember that on the good guys' side of the Sonic franchise was a red character. Unlike Sonic, Knuckles isn't a hedgehog, he's actually an Echidna, a type of ant-eater with a spiked body. And in the narrative world of the franchise, he's basically the confidant, serious, fighter-type. Where Sonic is fast, Knuckles is strong. You get the picture.
Spoiler Alert: If you're wondering why he wasn't in the first film, that's because it was basically Sonic's origin story. It explained how he came to Earth and how he was lonely when he first came here, so having friends like Knuckles would ruin that.
How Was Idris Elba's New Role Revealed?
Idris Elba dropped the news that he would be playing Knuckles in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog sequel via Twitter. This was his Tweet:

This was confirmed by the Sonic movie's official Twitter account. They must have been seriously thrilled to get an actor as talented and renowned as Elba for the part. Look, it's not going to be up there with the Wire, obviously, but we think he'll bring something great to the franchise.

When Will The Next Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Be Released?
The next Sonic the Hedgehog movie will be released on April 8, 2022. So for keen fans, that's only a few short months left to wait. And for those of you who haven't watched the first Sonic film, we'll say this much: it's better than fans feared when they saw what Sonic himself would look like. After that response, the studio made him a lot less bizarre-looking. Thank God.
