Netflix to Add Games to Its Streaming Services
A couple of months ago it was reported that Netflix is seriously looking into expanding into gaming and was looking for an executive to guide them to that goal. In mid-July, the project has its captain and an anticipated release date, which is a lot sooner than we expected.
The head of the Netflix gaming division is going to be Mike Verdu. He is a former employee of giants like Facebook and, crucially - Electronic Arts, with a large bag of experience in the field of gaming. Netflix were not willing to bet on an unproven talent.
As for the project itself, details are still few and far between. The most convinving bit of info comes from a Bloomberg report that games in Netflix’s video game expansion will be added alongside the company’s current selections - “similar to what Netflix did with documentaries or stand-up specials. Games won’t cost extra, at least at first, but it's not completely out of the realm of possibility in the future.
Netflix Gaming Release Date
The only other thing we can assume with considerable amount of certainty is that Netflix will continue hiring staff to work under Verdu. With the timetable they've set for themselves, that's practically a must within the coming weeks. The additional gaming services should go live on Netflix "in the next year", which is way less than it appears for a grand project like this.
The war of the streaming platforms is taking a new turn. While users are being torn in a million directions because everyone and their nanny has their own streaming site nowadays, the largest streaming companies are beginning to look towards expansion in other entertainment mediums. Priorities.
