Why The Scarlett Johanson vs. Disney Dispute Is So Ironic

The Scarlett Johanson vs. Disney dispute has kept the internet on its toes, with opinions varying vastly. Here is just another opinion piece on it that might trigger you, so beware.

If you’ve not been on Twitter last week, you may not be aware of what has been going down. Yet again, everyone was talking about it, so I doubt it. Just in case you are that 0.2% and don’t know what’s going on: Scarlett Johanson sued Disney because they allegedly released Black Widow on Disney+, which was not agreed upon in their contract. Why this is an issue? Because the sum that Scarlett Johanson would earn from Black Widow largely depended on what Black Widow would make at the box office. Nobody ever said anything about Disney+, though.

But that’s just what has already gone down, and we’re not here to report on that today.

Today, we want to talk about how ironic Disney’s statement to the lawsuit was.

Once news broke of Scarlett Johnson filing for the motion, Disney had no choice but to comment on the situation… and that kind of made things worse for them.

There is no merit whatsoever to this filing. [The suit is] especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, before I go into my point, let me just quickly share another quote that will give you some more insights of why I’m going to say what I’m going to say.

Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of ‘Black Widow’ on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20 million she has received to date.

There. Now you’re in the loop on what Disney had to say about the entire thing. Which is also already the problem.

Disney are making Scarlett Johanson look like a money-hungry actress that is not satisfied with more than 20 million dollars that she has made from Black Widow, while COVID-19 has millions of people struggling in all sorts of forms. But naturally... financially.

Think that’s very ironic… Disney… calling someone else money-hungry. When they are the ones who had Disney parks open during COVID-19 (and continue to have them open). When they are the ones who launched Disney+ in the first place, another subscription service, and, during a pandemic, wanted extra money for certain movies… like Black Widow.

Now, I hear you: but we were in a bad place, Disney opening up parks in these dark times made us happier. And you know what I say to that? I agree with you. With safety measures in place, why not open up parks and give people a little bit of happiness. We all love ourselves a stroll through Disney.

And what about Disney+? They announced it ages before, the fact that the launch fell into the pandemic was unfortunate. Oh, it was not unfortunate at all, for Disney. In fact, I think they profited quite heavily off of it... and then decided that that was not enough.

My problem with Disney calling someone else money hungry when that someone is just fighting for what's rightfully theirs, is that they are not in a position where they can call someone else money-hungry after everything they've done during a pandemic. Don’t throw bricks when you live in a glass house, that's all I'm saying.
