Pokémon is one of the most influential gaming-franchises in the whole world and proves this every day, sometimes in crazy ways. A professor now named three newly discovered species of beetles after the legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres from the Pokémon games.
Step aside, Beatles. There's a new iconic beetle-gang in town! The two scientists Dr. Darren Pollock and Yun Hsiao showed us what real Pokémon fanboys look like while they are working on the new edition of "Australian Beetles". Three new types of beetles were discovered, and their names might surprise you!
The new species is divided in three different types which are now called Binburrum articuno, Binburrum zapdos and Binburrum moltres, obviously named after the three Pokémon Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres. When I read this part, my jaw DROPPED.
Okay, I need to clarify something: only one of the scientists is a Pokémon fan. It was Yun's idea to name the beetles after the three legendary birds. He's been a big Pokémon fan since his childhood! But why is he naming the new species after these Pokémon specifically? They are birds and not bugs, after all. Well, he wanted to show how damn rare these insects are with these names. Just like the legendary Pokémon!
When you look at the little bugs, they look nothing like their big role models. Well, except that one of them fits color-wise because it looks a bit like Zapdos. But that's all the resemblance I can see. Is this the famous science-humor I heard so much about?
Unfortunately, the middle beetle is not the Zapdos beetle, but the one named after Moltres... stupidly. Thus, my great theory was destroyed with one blow. I already know why I didn't do my master's degree....
Anyway, Pollock thought his colleague's idea was great because they simply needed a name that didn't exist before. You can use the Pokédex for that, no problem!
In the meantime, two new species of the same genus have been discovered, which would also need their own names... Surely there's some other Pokémon that can be used for that, right? A few suggestions: Binburrum arceus, Binburrum latias, Binburrum dialga, Binburrum palkia.... I could go on like this all day!
