Squid Game's creator, who also directed and wrote the first season of the show, has confirmed that a second season is on its way.
Squid Game Season 2 has been confirmed by the show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk. Whilst it is unknown when we it will grace us with its presence on our Netflix screens, the writer and director has let us know that the show's second season is, indeed, in the works.
The South Korean drama was so successful, when it released back in September, that it has become Netflix's most successful show to date, expecting to amass almost a billion US dollars in revenue for the streaming giant. This tremendous success came as what seems like a surprise, with the script having been rejected for a decade before it was eventually picked up.
Hwang Dong-hyuk spoke to the Associated Press, telling them that he felt he has "no choice" but to create a second season of the show. We can't deny that, with those streaming numbers, that's certainly not untrue.
"So there's been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!"
Without divulging into any spoilers, Squid Game's first season ended in a way that could easily lead into a second season in a number of different and interesting ways. If you haven't seen the show already, Squid Game follows the plight of a number of central characters who compete against hundreds of other players for an insane cash-prize. The twist? If you lose, you die.
Speaking of the production of the second season of Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk also said the following:
I will say there will indeed be a second season. It's in my head right now. I'm in the planning process currently. But I do think it's too early to say when and how that's going to happen. So I will promise you this... Gi-hun will come back, and he will do something for the world...

This suggests perhaps that Squid Game Season 2 will extend beyond the strict walls of the Squid Game itself, and might dive more into the origins of the game, and the reasons behind its inception. Perhaps it could see the show's main character taking on the organizers of the game, and fighting to have them revealed to the public.
That all being said, we do not yet know when Squid Game Season 2 will drop on Netflix. Nor do we know what it will be about, or what will happen wherein. To be honest, we don't really want to know just yet. The first season was a tense and gripping experience, and something we would recommend whole-heartedly, and would not wish to spoil for anyone. Check it out, if you haven't already, and get hyped for Season 2!
