During the Sarah Michelle Geller Revival Tour, the iconic actress revealed a steamy kiss between Velma and Daphne, that got cut from the Scooby-Doo movie.
Sarah Michelle Geller was one of TV's most iconic actresses in the late 90s and early 2000s, playing roles like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Daphne in Scoopy-Doo. Regarding the latter, Geller dropped some saucy details during her Sarah Michelle Gellar Revival Tour.
In an interview on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live, Geller explained how there originally was supposed to be "a steamy kiss” between her character and Linda Cardellini’s Velma.
“It got cut. There was an actual kiss between Daphne and Velma that got cut. I feel like the world wants to see it. I don’t know where it is."
As Variety reports, back in 2020 the Scooby-Doo writer James Gunn openly admitted the same, “In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script”. He then continued to explain how the studio wouldn't let him do it:
“the studio just kept watering it down and watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) and finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
Geller continued, revealing another, more risqué line that was cut from the theatrical release. Apparently there was supposed to be a scene questioning Fred's sexuality as well.
“It’s something everyone’s thought for a long time. There’s always been an implication about Fred being interested in both parties. It all got cut.
With the Velma HBO show getting a lot of hate right now, it's kind of interesting to see how different the "original" Scooby-Doo adaptations could have looked.
You think they would have gotten the same hate?
