Ubisoft didn't have it easy in the past few years, but now the company plans to expand with a brand-new gaming channel called gTV. Here's all you need to know about it.
When you're under the shower, and you think about Ubisoft, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Is it Assassin's Creed? Probably. If not, then maybe it's the thought that "hey, Ubisoft should really do a TV/streaming channel to compete with Netflix." Well, say hello to gTV.
What is Ubisoft's gTV?
Let's start by saying that the channel is run by a third-party company and not directly by Ubisoft. This partially explains the lack of Ubisoft games in the trailer. In terms of content, gTV isn't exactly what you'd expect from a gaming channel: Instead of providing gaming reviews, gTV focuses on high quality programming:
- TV Shows
- Documentaries
- Talk-Shows
- Developer Diaries
You'll dive behind the scenes with composers that score games or a real-life biker gang that met through GTA V. Really, Ubisoft is challenging Netflix and its ever-growing library of genre-specific documentaries. Whereas foodies go to Netflix, it seems gTV wants to win over gamers.
In fact, the first official video on the channel was released today, and it's all about said GTA V motorcycle gang called The Reapers:
Moving away from the typical structure of a gaming channel is good, but it also carries some risks. On one hand, it's something different that hasn't been explored enough, on the other, it might be harder for it to gain traction and bigger followership. Can it compete against the existing streaming giants?
You won't have to wait to find out, since gTV goes live on YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and Twitchtoday.
