EVO Online cancelled

For over a week now, the #metoo movement has ravaged the esports scene. Every day new statements appear on social media and as a result, EVO got canceled.

At the moment, there is hardly any other topic in social media. Almost every hour, statements from both female and male streamers, content creators, esports professionals, etc. appear on Twitter, among others. They report about (sexual) abuse by other people from the same industry. The Dota 2 scene especially seems to be having a lot of cases.

But there are also serious accusations in the CS:GO scene and even against the streaming platform Twitch. The case of CS:GO-caster HenryG shows how controversial the topic is.

SonicFox leaves EVO online

One of the most popular players in the FGC Dominique "SonicFox" McLean stated that they're done with EVO online.

This came a bit as a shock for many of the fans since SonicFox. Mclean's statement came as a result of the sexual allegations raised against one of the co-founders of EVO - Joey Cuellar.

EVO online canceled

The EVO is one of the biggest and most important Esports tournaments for fighting games like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken and Dragonball FighterZ. Originally, the event was planned to be held in Las Vegas in 2020 but had to be switched to an online format due to COVID-19.Only yesterday, player Mikey shared his experiences from the 90s on Twitter with Joey "Mr. Wizard" Cuellar, the EVO co-founder. Some community members shared more suspicious stories about Cuellar shortly thereafter.

EVO responded immediately to Twitter and announced that they were aware of the allegations and that Joey Cuellar had taken an administrative leave so they can begin an investigation.

Just one day later EVO posted another statement on Twitter. In this statement, fans could find the cancelation of the event along with the further steps that will be taken.

Joey Cuellar will have nothing more to do with the EVO in the future, they are currently working on cutting all connections to him. Tony Cannon will assume the role of CEO immediately. They are shocked and sad and want to restructure the EVO seriously, so they decided to cancel this year's EVO Online completely. All players who have purchased a badge will be refunded, but as promised, the equivalent of the proceeds will be donated to Project HOPE.

We are curious how the current situation will develop further so stay tuned for more updates.
