EA Sports open the voting for Team of the Year (TOTY) today. One of the most anticipated FUT events of the season is one we can do some guess work on, so that's what we're about to do!

EA Sports announced on Twitter that TOTY voting starts January 7, which suggests the event itself could begin right after the current FUT Headliners frenzy.

What Is FIFA 21 TOTY?

It's called Team of the Year, so it can't be too many things, right? Just a compilation of ridiculously strong cards modeled after the best-performing footballers over the course of the calendar year. Examples from last year are Lionel Messi and Virgil Van Dijk's 99-rated cards and Kylian Mbappé's 98 OVR gem.

TOTY cards will be available in packs after the official launch of the event, but in reality the odds of getting one are astronomical. That's why the FUT market goes crazy around this time of year: everyone is trying to collect coins to purchase one or two of these behemoths. If you're sneaky enough, you might find some bargains in the coming days.

FIFA 21 TOTY Prediction

TOTY works like the Ballon d'Or: it doesn't look at a singular season, but at the calendar year. Bayern München won the treble in 2019/20 and are leading the Bundesliga gain in 2020/21, which makes us certain of a few names being on the list.

Robert Lewandowski is perhaps the most surefire player on there. He most certainly would have preferred the Ballon d'Or if given a choice, but FIFA 21 TOTY is what he'll have to settle for. Teammates Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich are the other Bayern players that should make a TOTY appearance. We've also given the LB nod to Alphonso Davies, but Andrew Robertson returning for a back-to-back isn't out of the question.

As the squad is not determined by EA Sports alone, but by player vote as well, popularity does play a huge role, which means some star names might make it over better deserving ones. The easiest example of this is Cristiano Ronaldo who, even on a down year, is likely to make it over Erling Haaland.

Here's our prediction of how FIFA 21 TOTY will shape up:

  • GK: Manuel Neuer - 96 OVR (Bayern München)
  • LB: Alphonso Davies - 92 OVR (Bayern München)
  • CB: Sergio Ramos - 98 OVR (Real Madrid)
  • CB: Virgil Van Dijk - 98 OVR (Liverpool)
  • RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold - 94 OVR (Liverpool)
  • CDM: Joshua Kimmich (FC Bayern) - 95 OVR (Bayern München)
  • CM: Kevin De Bruyne - 98 OVR (Manchester City)
  • LW: Neymar - 97 OVR (Paris Saint-Germain)
  • ST: Robert Lewandowski - 99 OVR (Bayern München)
  • RW: Lionel Messi - 99 OVR (Barcelona)
  • ST: Cristiano Ronaldo - 99 OVR (Juventus/Piemonte Calcio)

We will find out which players are on the ballot as early as tonight. Presumably the voting will start at 7pm CET on the EA Sports website.
