Who is Bloodsport?
Bloodsport is a pseudonym used by two fictional supervillains who appear in American comics published by DC Comics. All of these versions exist in DC's shared universe known as the DC Universe. The original Bloodsport was created by writer and cartoonist John Byrne and first appeared in Superman Vol. 2, No. 4 in April 1987. And it's actually quite an interesting story how Bloodsport got its name.
It started with Robert DuBois, a Vietnam draft-dodger who suffered a nervous breakdown and became obsessed with the Vietnam War after learning that his brother had gone there in his place. DuBois was drafted to serve in the United States Armed Forces. However, when he received his draft notice, DuBois fled to Canada, not because he was morally opposed to the war, but because he was afraid of dying. DuBois' younger brother, Michael, volunteered for the draft in his place, posing as Robert. Michael DuBois was sent into combat in Vietnam, where he lost both arms and legs. When Robert learned that his brother had lost his limbs, DuBois went insane from the guilt.
He was eventually contacted by individuals working for billionaire Lex Luthor who was looking for a pawn to assassinate Luthor's archenemy, Superman. Luthor's associates, under the direction of a man named Kimberley, played on DuBois' obsession with Vietnam to psychologically condition him to kill Superman. They also equipped DuBois with an arsenal of powerful, advanced weapons, including a pistol that fired needles made of kryptonite. DuBois then went into action in Metropolis, calling himself Bloodsport.
