If you've ever played a tournament in Fortnite, you've probably come across the term PR or Power Ranking. But what does this term actually mean, how is it calculated, and where can you check it?
Since its release in 2017, Fortnite: Battle Royale has become one of the biggest video games in the competitive scene. Epic's financial commitment to the game's tournaments has helped grow many experienced players and even easily allowed many of the fans to participate in large esport events. However, if you're just getting into the competitive scene, some terms used here can be a bit confusing. First and foremost, you're probably wondering what PR means in Fortnite.
PR in Fortnite Explained
PR means Power Ranking and, in Fortnite, it refers to the rankings of players based on the results of tournaments organized by Epic Games. While Power Rankings are the best way to find out who the best Fortnite players are or what ranking you yourself are on, we should mention that they are not based on any "official" numbers from Epic Games. They are all calculated by Fortnite Tracker, an independent site not overseen by the game's developer and publisher.
How PR Is Calculated in Fortnite
A player's ranking and PR is calculated based on their performance in tournaments. Players can receive different numbers of points based on a few different metrics:
- The value of the tournament they participate in
- The number of players involved
- The format
- The prize pool
For each tournament, a player can receive anywhere from 5 to 1000 points depending on their ranking.
- Those outside the top 100 will receive between 5 and 199 points.
- Those who place in the top 100 will receive between 200 and 1000 points.
The importance of an event depends on the multiplier. According to Fortnite Tracker, A Cash Cup can have a 1x multiplier, while a World Cup Qualifier has a 10x multiplier. This means that winning a FNCS Qualifier will earn you 10,000 points, as opposed to the maximum 1,000 points you get for winning a Cash Cup.
To ensure that the Power Rankings always show the current best players, a decay system has also been introduced. Basically, the older the tournaments, the less impact it has on your Power Ranking. This way, inactive players are slowly phased out of the community.
The decay works in the following ways: Four months after a tournament has been played, the expiration starts. Initially, 10% of the points from that tournament will be deducted. This percentage slowly increases each month until 18 months have passed. After 18 months, the entire tournament will be removed from the leaderboard calculation.
