The Jumpstart release draws near and the preview season’s at full swing. We were shown some incredible packs lately, not the least of which is the Angels cycle, featuring solid value cards and a much-appreciated reprint of Linvala, Keep of Silence - a $20 Commander mainstay.

What’s that - a bird? A plane? It’s an Angel!

Actually, it’s a whole flight of Angels. The upcoming and highly anticipated Jumpstart set for Magic: The Gathering and MTG Arena is bringing not one, but two sets of heavenly winged creatures.

The boosters are heavily thematic and every card seems to contribute to the celestial white-mana feel. Even supporting cards include things like Angelic Edict and Scroll of Avacyn, named so after Innistrad’s angelic protector, and the non-angel creatures are all clerics and generally the type of folk who would commune with the heavens.

But you are not here to read about artifacts, so let’s get to the good part.

As you might expect, the two sets are full of… well, angels. These massive winged creatures always sport some amazing stats and the Flying keyword, making your opponents work really hard to deal with them. The decks are very much structured in a beat stick style - play your creatures and attack with them. Nice and simple.

The two Angels collections include timeless classics like Serra Angel, Angelic Arbiter, and the absolute massive Baneslayer Angel. The latter makes its pack pretty much one of the best ones in all of Jumpstart and so cracking it open will bring a real burst of joy to any player.

However, one of the most exciting aspects of the two Angelic sets must be the reprint of Linvala, Keeper of Silence who’s finally making a comeback. While the lady with the scales has never had that big of an impact in other formats, Commander players love her for the repressing ability that affects all three opponents in a multiplayer setting, and the sheer lack of supply rose her price all the way to $20-ish, which will now hopefully go well down.

Last, but not least, is the very special angelic Basic Plains card that comes with the pack, featuring a very eye-catching abstract painting of a feather-covered field. This is a true must-have for any Angels tribal player!
