League of Legends looks incredibly difficult to play but don't worry! EarlyGame has your bottom lane warded and pinged enemies missing to keep you on your toes before you decide to enter the Summoner's Rift.
League of Legends is a game that's been around for well over a decade now. With 148 champions that can be very difficult to master, all with different skills and ultimate abilities, players can be easily put off from trying it out. If you are a newcomer, there are three things you really need to know before deciding to jump (or ward hop) in. With these easy tips and tricks, you'll be on your way to success.
1. Master the basics of the Summoner's Rift and the different positions
What's a Summoner's Rift, you ask? This map is statistically considered the "main map" that most individual players will play on when playing League of Legends. The Summoner's Rift is made up of three lanes that you can see outlined in the image above. These are called the top, middle and bottom lanes, with some space in between called the jungle. Which lane you pick will usually determine the League of Legends Champion and the role you'll play.
Speaking of roles, these are also broken down into five different sub-categories:
Top-lane: Should you be in the top part of Summoner's Rift, you'll usually be playing the tank or a bruiser champion that can take damage and dish some out.
Middle-lane: The middle lane is usually reserved for the mages that deal with ability power. Be careful, though, these champions usually do not have a lot of health!
Jungler: This is the trickiest of all the roles as the Jungler does not have an officially assigned lane. Champions to consider for the jungle are ones that have great mobility to support the various lanes in the Summoner's Rift.
ADC: Attack damage carry is the role you'll be playing in the bottom part of Summoner's Rift. You'll usually choose a champion that excels in killing minions and dishing out major attack damage in the middle to late game.
Support: Support classes keep the ADC alive and support them in all times of the game. There is a wide range of support classes – from those that just heal to those who are very aggressive. Support classes are incredibly important in the EarlyGame (see what we did there) when they can prevent the death of a farming ADC.
2. Learn one champion in each lane well
This one will truly test your patience in the long run but the end result is far more rewarding. Pick a lane, any lane! This lane now becomes the only lane you play. Pick a champion you like for that lane and get learning! We highly suggest using the Practise Tool when deciding to learn a new champion.
For example, back in 2012 when a certain author of this article first began playing, they decided to play the upper portion of the Summoner's Rift and learned the champion Riven. Looking back, it was the fact that she was a champion that had no mana cost. That really stood out as the reason why she was picked in the first place. You can also pick a champion just because they look cool. We don't judge at EarlyGame.
3. Communicate
In a previous article, we mentioned that communication is super important when playing video games. In League of Legends, this is also the case. There are many different terms of vocabulary you'll need to grasp and understand which will take time. For now, focus on using the ping system Riot Games has provided to communicate to your team just what exactly is going on within your game and we can assure you it'll prevent a lot more deaths than if you didn't... Just don't spam your pings, please.
And that about does it for our top three things you need to know before joining the wild world that is League of Legends. Take your time and above all else, have fun. League of Legends is free to play.
