The League of Legends Twitch Rivals Team Draft tournament concluded its North American series this Friday night. What happened? Limit Test took an easy victory in the finals. Here’s how it went.
Late Friday evening saw the finals of the League of Legends Twitch Rivals tournament for North America. After dropping a game in the semifinals, team Limit Test did not allow an upset. The heavy favorites easily dispatched Genius Gang to secure the top prize in Twitch’s streamer-focused competition.
The event followed team draft rules, with the captains of the eight teams taking turns to select members for their rosters. The tournament proper started on Tuesday, January 21, with the eight squads separated in two groups of four each. Then, everyone played against everyone else in the group twice. The top two teams from each group would progress to the playoff round with a best-of-three format. The teams would get $1,000 per win in the group stage, with extra prizes for the top 4 spots.
The two Twitch Rivals finalists had actually met in the group stage. There, Limit Test won all six games while Genius Gang ended 2-4, but managed to secure the second place and a spot in the semifinals by winning a three-way tiebreaker. Both teams won their respective best-of-three series in the semifinal, however, which saw them face off once more for a rematch.
Unfortunately for lovers of dramatic twists in League of Legends esports, we were denied an underdog victory. Limit Test, captained by streamer and Team Liquid Academy substitute player Ashkan “TF Blade” Homayouni brooked no challenge in the first game. Limit demolished their opponents in a stomp that saw Genius Gang take only three kills, all on GG’s captain Joedat “Voyboy” Esfahani. The former Team Dignitas and Team Curse top laner could only watch as his team crumbled around him.
The second game was slightly more contested, but only just. In the end, Limit Test still had over double the kills of their opponents and were deservedly hailed as the Twitch Rivals champions. You can watch the showdown on Twitch.
Apart from bragging rights, this victory brings the champions $25,000 for the first place on top of the $6,000 they picked for group wins. The second-place team will have to make do with a total of $17,000.
In two weeks, League of Legends fans can watch the European installment of the event, which starts on Monday, February 3.
