While League of Legends fans are probably focused on Worlds right now, there are still various other announcements coming out around the world. One of them is Riot Games’ statement on the upcoming 2022 LEC Spring Split that they posted on the official LoL Esports site, coming from Riot Head of Esports for League of Legends in Europe & MENA Maximilian 'Max the X' Peter Schmidt. Hey, better getit done early, right?
Team BDS Joins the LEC
So first, the big news: the LEC is kicking off on January 14th in much the same format as before - except for one change in the roster. The Swiss organization Team BDS that previously had a team in the LFL will play in the LEC instead of FC Schalke 04 Esports after purchasing the spot for €26.5m in June. Schalke did state that they will keep their esports presence, but will be competing in the regional leagues instead. So far, we don’t know much about the new roster or any team details, but it is likely that BDS will look for extra talent in order to compete in the LEC. No doubt we can expect some interesting moves in the transfer season.
No Road Shows for Spring
Now for a bit of bad news: in the spring split, the LEC will be back to online shows. While the announcement clarified that Riot is looking for options to return to road shows for the summer, its focus for the spring is fully on improving the online experience. There was no mention for any live shows in the main LEC studio in Berlin, but we’re not holding our breath for any ticket sales. It seems that the games may be played in front of a poro audience for a while yet.
