Patch 11.2 came out and with it the newest League of Legends champion and first champ of 2021: Viego the Ruined King. Not only will Viego be available in League of Legends, but he is coming to many other platforms as well and even getting his own game in Ruined King – a League of Legends Story.
So now that the new jungle skirmisher is out there, people want to play him. What do his abilities even do and which runes work best with him? We take a quick look at what's what!
P - Sovereign’s Domain: His passive lets him briefly possess killed champions. When possessed, Viego can use their abilities and gains extra movement speed. This is a great ability to use, especially if you manage to possess the opponents' carry champion.
Q - Blade of the Ruined King: Viego thrusts his sword in the target direction, dealing physical damage. This ability also has a passive, which marks opponents. Hitting marked opponents with basic attacks will consume the mark and strike them twice, while healing Viego.
W - Spectral Maw: This is his cc ability. It charges up, slowing Viego down, but once re-cast he dashes forward, stunning the opponents he hits. This will be the main ability to use when ganking opponents.

E - Harrowed Path: The ability lets Viego jungle peacefully. He creates a line of black mist that wraps around structures, sort of like Qiyana’s ultimate, only this mist camouflages Viego and increases his movement and attack speed. It is important to note that attacking anyone will cancel the camouflage.
R - Heartbreaker: Viego dashes towards the lowest health champion, knocking back all other champions, and deals damage based on the amount of missing health.
Viego can have various builds, depending on what you want out of him. The most common would be to take the Precision rune path and pick up Conqueror along with Triumph. This is great for his ultimate, since it is a take-down ability that can reset, just like Legend: Alacrity and Coup de Grace. These are the standard bruiser and AD duelist runes, which give him some added damage when he goes in and out of skirmishes.

As mentioned, this is not the only build available for him. Picking the Domination rune path with Dark Harvest will make Viego a late-game assassin who can one-shot opponents with ease.
Of course, if your team is in need of a tankier jungler, going with the Resolve rune path and Grasp of the Undying is also a good choice. It all depends on the matchups and what is needed of Viego.
Make sure to take things slow, since he is a champion who enjoys small skirmishes rather than big team fights. Also note to pick the highest damage output champion of the opposing team to possess, rather than one with a lot of utility. You want to do the most damage possible with your possession.
