Who is Aatrox According to His Lore?

Aatrox was a Shuriman Ascended who set out to fight against the Void. He is described as having had wings that shone like the golden light of dawn and having armor that sparkled like a constellation of hope. He was a noble warrior whom many followed into battle.
He and other Ascended, went into battle at Icathia to try and stop the rebels of the Void. The battle lasted years, but eventually, Aatrox and the other Ascended warriors – also known as Sungods – came out victorious. However, each lost a part of themselves to the Void. None of them were ever the same after the battle.
With time the empire of Shurima, which he and the other Sungods had protected, fell. With the Void wiped out and no empire to protect, the Sungods turned on one another, starting their own war.
To protect all of Runeterra, Targonians intervened. In this battle, Aatrox was sealed within his own sword; a prison that would hold him for centuries. It would be centuries later that a human tried to wield the sword that was Aatrox. Aatrox managed to overtake the body, extending his self into the flesh. But his host died.

In the years that followed, Aatrox took on many other hosts, draining them of their life force. He also realized that he could drain the life force of others to build himself up and make himself strong. He wished, desperately, to get back to his once Ascended form, but nothing ever worked, causing him to grow desperate and hateful.
He could never escape the sword, unable to regain his old form. He was forever imprisoned. With this realization, that he was forced into this prison of his sword for all eternity, Aatrox now roams the world, bringing war and death wherever he goes.
What Are Darkin According to LoL Lore?
Darkin are corrupt Ascended who were sealed within their own weapons. The corruption happened when the Ascended fought against the Void. In Aatrox’s story, this happened due to the Void war which took place in Icathia. He had been called to help defeat the rebels of Icathia and the Void.

There are multiple other Darkin weapons that have been discovered all over Runeterra, such as Rhaast which is wielded by Kayn as well as Varus who is still trying to take over both his hosts Kai and Valmar – but more on those later when we look at their LoL champion lore.
What Are The Ascended in LoL Lore?
The Ascended are humans which were magically altered – most often by celestial magic. Those who become Ascended retain their magical powers, but also gain a link to celestial magic with which they are able to tap into it and use it as well.
According to various champion lore, both Tagronians and Shurimans created Ascended. The Shuriman’s used the large Sun Disc at Nerimazeth to create their God-Warriors. Some of the most well-known Champions who went through the Ascension are Renekton and Nasus, two brothers whose champion lore we will also be getting to soon!
Are there Other Ascended and Darkin Champions in LoL Lore?
There are quite a few. Aatrox' lore talks about him being a very noble warrior whom many other God-Warriors would follow. He was trusted by others to lead them into battle and come out victorious.

Through other champion lore, like that of Malphite, we know that there were many more Ascended. According to Malphite’s lore, he was created by the Ascended Ne’Zuk and Kassadin’s Nether Blade had belonged to the Ascended Horok.
Maybe one day we get to see these characters as playable champions as well on Summoner’s Rift? Who knows…
