Riot just revealed the next legendary skin to receive a mythic variant in the upcoming League of Legends patch. This new skin – which many also simply call a chroma – has caused quite a lot of controversy within the League of Legends community.
Earlier this year Riot revealed their first attempt at creating a "super exclusive" skin for the biggest spenders in League of Legends. While 99% of the LoL-players base spoke out against this new pricing policy of creating Mythic Variants, it seems that the first – Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin – sold enough to warrant a second attempt.
Riot have just revealed the next Mythic Variant for the 2019 True Damage Ekko skin – Breakout True Damage Ekko. But it feels like the company is more out of touch than ever before with the grand majority of their player base.

It's pretty sad to see hundreds of comments from players being happy that their favorite champions are either unpopular or don't have a legendary skin in League of Legends, right? Well, that is what is currently happening within the League community as Riot revealed the upcoming Breakout True Damage Ekko.
In a blog post Stephanie “100 pc nuggets” Leung and Caden "Riot Sakaar" House go over their learnings from the Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin skin and what the team is doing to try and improve upon, but most of the League of Legends community feels like Riot isn't listening to them at all regarding this issue.
On both Reddit, Twitter and YouTube, players have expressed their immense disappointment with Riot and the direction the company is taking their monetization in.
In an earlier post, Riot Brightmoon explained that a microscopic minority of players want more exclusive content, since prestige and mythic skins have become far too common. But many players believe that this is not the right way to go about this.
Even content creators are not happy with Riot and their monetization:
What had players especially furious regarding the upcoming Breakout True Damage Ekko skin was the fact that Riot wrote that, "the majority of the feedback we ended up seeing was around lack of differentiation between Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin and the original Dark Cosmic Jhin."
Because of this feedback about the last skin, Riot will make sure to truly differentiate this True Damage Ekko skin from the original with VFX and model changes. Though, most feel that the true feedback went straight over Riot's heads. The majority of players feel like the company is going in the wrong direction by adding in these gacha aspects to their game.
💡 What Is A Gacha-System/Gacha Game? A gacha game is a mobile or online game that employs a virtual capsule-toy vending machine mechanic. Players spend in-game currency to acquire random virtual items or characters, often with varying rarity levels, enhancing gameplay or collectibility. |
One Reddit user noted down everything that Riot has done throughout the year regarding monetization:
- Introduced a Chroma that costs 40 ME (Mythic Chromas).
- Made some event Chromas bundle exclusive (La Ilusion and Coven Akali).
- Added a Gacha system to League with a skin priced at $200 if you're not lucky (Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin and Breakout True Damage Ekko).
- Made a statement that some upcoming TFT chibis will cost upwards of $500 (Chibi Prestige Dragonmancer Yasuo).
- Redeemed Xayah and Rakan will be priced at 250 Mythic Essence EACH once they're out of the shop
Just like with Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin, players will have to purchase up to 30 capsules to be guaranteed the Breakout True Damage Ekko Mythic Variant. Of course, there is always a 1% change of getting the skin early, but most players will have to use all 30 pulls to get it.

The Capsule Milestone was also updated for True Damage Ekko, adding in more Mythic Essence because "[Riot] learned that there’s a sizable group of people who aren't interested in completing a showcase track but do want to buy some capsules because they want to get a bit more Mythic Essence in between events."
Overall, the League of Legends community is once again aflame after the reveal of this glorified True Damage Ekko chroma. Riot did reveal that they would have some form of blog post or video up in December in which they will discuss broader monetization strategies, but the community is not hopeful in the least that Riot will listen to their complaints.
