Week two of the LEC saw several hard-fought matches as the best teams in Europe continued their fight. Rogue now stands alone at the top after securing a 2-0 week and G2’s loss to FC Schalke 04.

After the three-day opening weekend, the LEC continued this weekend with ten more games. While last week already showed pre-season forecasts are not immune to upsets, this week saw more surprises. FC Schalke 04 had a great showing against both SK Gaming and, more impressively, G2 Esports and now shares a joint third place with MAD Lions. Fnatic, meanwhile, is still struggling to find its stride, alternating between confident play and reckless brawling.

LEC 2021 Spring Split: Week 2 Day 1

The week began with a match between Excel Esports and MAD Lions. Predictably, the Lions got an early lead and while their opponents found some kills back, gold remained firmly in the favorites’ advantage. MAD won a clutch fight and took the Baron off it 23 minutes in and after that, there was little Excel could do to resist. The following match was the German showdown between FC Schalke 04 and SK Gaming. The Royal Blues struck first, but SK stabilized the game and secured several drakes that gave them a good chance for a late game comeback. Yet in the decisive teamfights, Schalke came on top, taking a baron after an ace 23 minutes in and never giving SK a chance to take back the lead.

What followed was a very one-sided a match between G2 Esports and Astralis. Despite a first blood going to Astralis’ top laner Matti "WhiteKnight" Sormunen, G2 took the advantage from the first 10 minutes and never let their opponents get close. In one of the most awaited games on the day, Rogue beat Misfits Gaming. It was not an easy game, despite the favorites having an early lead. Misfits fought them hard and kept the game close until an attempt to contest the Baron resulted in Rogue getting the ace and pushing in to win the game. In the final game of the day, Fnatic did not allow any upsets from Team Vitality. "Bwipo" Rau and Oskar "Selfmade" Boderek both had a great start and led their team in a game that might have taken longer than it should have to end, but never looked close.

LEC 2021 Spring Split: Week 2 Day 2

Excel Esports got a crucial win against Astralis in the opening match of day two. The game was fairly close until a mistake by the former Origen allowed XL to get two vital kills and an early Baron. Astralis managed to delay until another error at the Baron lost them the game. SK Gaming, meanwhile, scored an impressive upset against Misfits Gaming in a dominant showing. Despite a draft that was tricky to execute, SK was the more active team on the map and executed better in the teamfights, getting their second win of the split and tying Misfits at 2-3. We nearly saw another upset in the Team Vitality vs Rogue game. The French squad put up impressive resistance against the favorites, even taking the first Baron of the game. However, the favorites persevered and were rewarded with two kills that let them secure the ocean soul buff. The game reached over 40 minutes, but in the end, Rogue remain undefeated.

G2, however, can no longer say the same. A sloppy start against FC Schalke 04 saw the German team take two early kills and gradually amass a gold lead. Led by jungler Erberk "Gilius" Demir continued catching G2 unprepared and slowly took over the map, taking two Barons before winning the key teamfight that won them the game and a top 4 spot in the rankings. After their 2020 miracle run, can Schalke surprise us again?

The last game of the day featured MAD Lions taking on Fnatic in a bloody brawl that saw both teams score impressive kills and make just as impressive errors. The summer finalists were initially on the back foot but managed to recover and even get the first Baron of the game. However, MAD did not give up and aced Fnatic in a scrappy fight 28 minutes in, securing the Baron and once again taking control of the game. The teams kept clashing, but in the end it was MAD who earned the win.
