LEC summer frontrunner MAD Lions tripped against an on-point Misfits Gaming. A rare Fiddlesticks was masterfully piloted to wreak havoc among the favorites.
Misfits Gaming came in this split with high expectations, but they were quickly tempered. Despite several key wins, the team came to this match as very much the underdog, especially after Friday’s loss to G2 Esports. MAD, on the other hand, were on a 7-game winning streak, ironically after losing their opening game to the same G2.
After five minutes of mostly even game Misfits won a series of skirmishes around the map, first catching two MAD players in the river six minutes in, then taking a 2:0 in the top when Iván "Razork" Martín Díaz’s Fiddle counterganked with an ultimate. MAD were getting hammered in the latter part of the early game and 15 minutes in, they were 5K gold down and had only two kills to Misfits’ 10. The Spanish team was able to bring the game closer with a series of kills, but Misfits’ answer was quick and merciless. By the 20-minute mark, MAD were 10K gold behind and had no structures outside of their base.
Two minutes later, Misfits found their opponents in the river and engaged on them, getting two kills and the Baron. They were soon knocking on the doors on the enemy base and by the 25-minute mark had taken down two inhibitors. In their next attack, they once more got a good engage on MAD and quickly routed them to win the game.
This game was peak Misfits, with aggressive carries and a jungler who, after managing to get a good start, was an absolute terror on the map. MAD had to play the entire game on the back foot and found no answer to Misfits’ aggression.
With this, MAD Lions are again tied with Rogue for the lead, while Misfits share third place with G2 with a 5:4 record. Even more importantly, after today’s upsets there are five teams standing at 4:5. The second part of the summer split promises to be spicy.
