This weekend, BlizzCon 2021, also known as BlizzConline, took place. Besides lots of great info on our favorite games like Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4, there was also a very curious performance by Metallica, which Twitch promptly ruined.
As part of BlizzConline 2021, for some reason, the legendary Metallica was invited to grace the stream with a live concert. If you still want to listen to Metallica in 2021, you'll still be paying monthly for WoW (don't quote me on that...). Metallica performing completely out of context in a video game event. All well and good, video game PR has delivered much stranger things. But what happened, in the end, could go down in history as one of the biggest mishaps in a video game event ever...
What Exactly Happened?
Good question! During BlizzCon, Metallica played the song For Whom the Bell Tolls, an absolute classic of their discography. If you followed the performance on Blizzard's website or YouTube, you could also enjoy the song and the grey dads' drumming. On the official channel Twitchgaming, it looked a bit different.
Here, only the beginning of the song could be heard. After that, the video went silent for a short while, and afterward, and this is no joke, royalty-free 8-bit folk music was played, which couldn't be more inappropriate for Metallica. As @Slasher speculates, this was done to prevent a DMCA takedown. We've reported on the issues with licensed music on Twitch in the past.
The months-long struggle with this really, really annoying problem probably culminates in the Metallica 8Bit Polka story, which is tragic-comic. The DMCA madness has gone so far that the official Twitch channel had to resort to such a drastic and hilarious method. Will the over-sounding of Metallica perhaps lead to a change of heart? We don't think so, but one can dream.
