A Legend of Zelda Netflix show has been leaked by a Netflix employee who spoke to The Wall Street Journal. Once word got out, the show was canceled, and everyone is heaving a sigh of relief. Video game TV show and movie adaptations have been a mixed bag, with some shows like The Witcher seeing success, and some seeing both critical and commercial failure.
Well, we are not the first to say: “Thank god for that!” We heard the news of a Zelda Netflix adaptation, and our bones shook with worry. At the news of its cancelation, it's time to break out the Champaign! It might sound harsh, but let's be real, most video game films are heaving piles of dog s**t.
The leak originally came through a Wall Street Journal article which announced the tv show alongside a slate of video game adaptations that Netflix had in store for our poor, poor souls. Whilst, personally, we thought The Witcher was great, we certainly didn't want the TV-Giant digging out the soul of our favorite video games!
The original leak came back in 2015, and was originally kind-of interesting, described in the Wall Street Journal as “Game of Thrones for a family audience”. However, it's been a few years now (a-durr), and Link probably won't be saving Princess Zelda on our TV screens, as Netflix has cut a multitude of shows from its roster.
As we keep reiterating, you probably shouldn't be sad about this. Imagine how weird a live-action Zelda show would be. Oof, we are in pain just thinking about it. The story, however, is fascinating. Zelda has had a couple of spin-offs, such as the horrendous CD-i games back in the early 1990s, and people have been talking about this ever since.
What is even more curious, is the reason for its cancelation. This was explained by Adam Conover, who was originally working on a Claymation Star Fox show. Speaking of his boss, he said:
“He was like, ‘someone at Netflix leaked the Legend of Zelda thing, they weren't supposed to talk about it, Nintendo freaked out... and they pulled the plug on everything, the entire program to adapt these things.'"
So, that's it. Looks like we won't be seeing any Netflix adaptations of Nintendo games for a long time. Whilst we certainly appreciate the effort, and sometimes these things can be pretty cool, we are not that disappointed about the result. At least this way, we won't be disappointed by an awful TV show...
