Ubisoft has announced that it will be collaborating with Lucasfilm Games to produce a story-driven game set in the Star Wars universe. The announcement is hugely exciting for any gamer, Ubisoft fan or not, who loves Star Wars, as it is a distinct break from the last decade of Star Wars in gaming.
Lucasfilm Games are on fire as, only a day after their giant Indiana Jones announcement with Bethesda, a new Star Wars game has been announced in collaboration with Ubisoft! The Assassin’s Creed and Division juggernaut will be taking the reins in a new story-based narrative title set in the Star Wars universe, and we are on the edge of our seats!
In 2023, Electronic Arts’ decade-long Disney and Star Wars exclusivity deal will be up, and it has been all but confirmed that the deal will not be renewed for another decade. This perhaps gives us a clue about the potential release of this new Ubisoft game: not until after 2023.
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot had this to say in a press release:
“This is the beginning of a long-term collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm Games, and we are pleased to be working hand-in-hand to build upon the incredible legacy of Lucasfilm to create a game that we know Star Wars fans will love.”
People have been generally unhappy with EA’s Star Wars efforts, with the Battlefront games being a largely disappointing affair, and the only real saving grace being Jedi: Fallen Order, which was a pretty solid story-based Star Wars adventure. Perhaps Ubisoft could make the difference!
Please keep in mind that, whilst this is an insanely exciting announcement, no further details have been announced. There is, as of writing, no information available on what the game will feature. It could potentially be an open world, but there is nothing known about story or gameplay yet.
The new Ubisoft Star Wars title will be developed allegedly by The Division’s Massive Entertainment, which could spell good news for fans of Ubisoft’s flagship series. The Division has had a mixed reception, but many people love it, and this could perhaps offer a few hints as to the identity of the future Star Wars game.
That being said, it is important to reiterate that nothing is really known about this new Star Wars game. Just because the new game might be developed by the creators of The Division does not mean that it will be at all similar to that game, perhaps, we could be looking forward to something completely different...
