A short tweet by MTGA makers Wizards of the Coast suggests the current Standard environment needs an urgent adjustment and a new wave of bannings and suspensions is expected to hit the game Monday or Tuesday.
We know that most MTG games currently happen inside MTG Arena and Wizards pay close attention to the metagame, constantly running the numbers. This, in turn, means that we live in an age where new bannings happen more often than ever, and sometimes effective immediately.
This means that come this Monday, September 28, we’ll most likely see some of the game’s most powerful cards taken out. The tweet reads:
We're closely monitoring developments in Standard. In order to avoid disrupting this weekend's tournaments, we intend to provide an update on the format early next week.
This is yet another announcement of an announcement, giving us just enough time to speculate - just like we did last time. Looking at the current Standard meta, one or two decks dominate, namely Four-color Omnath and Sultai Control. Once key card they share is Uro, Titan of Nature’s Wrath, a very powerful creature that’s also quite prominent in Historic. This makes the big guy prime target for banning.
Wizards are absolutely doing the right thing by allowing weekend tournaments to be played without disruption, but exercise caution - this might be the last couple of days you’ll have with your Uro-based decks.
