Turns out that a cross-platform mobile version of Magic: The Gathering Arena is really in the works and will come out this year, Wizards of the Coast reports.

Constantly evolving

The constant evolution of MTGA continues – after the newly-introduced Player Draft and various quality-of-life improvements, next in line is cross-platform play.

It’s definitely the season for card game makers to talk about their road maps. After Hearthstone’s massive info dump on everything 2020, Wizards followed suit with an article dubbed MTG Arena: State of the game - April 2020. There are a couple of things that come to MTGA both in the short and in the long term.

First, Godzilla is here. Card styles with him and his Japanese monster friends will be awarded to players who buy a Draft ticket or a bundle of at least 6 Ikoria packs. There’s a total of 18 of these.

Second, a big user interface update is coming to better depict the tokens and abilities of cards. Oh, and new portraits, some of which we’ve never seen before. This includes the moonfolk planeswalker Tamiyo!

For the hardcore crowd

Last, but not least – Wizards of the Coast is working on a feature dubbed Player Challenges, though the name might change. The idea here is to introduce high-skill events in short time frames that award a lot more than gold and boosters.

These will be built in the same fashion as the current event – with a set number of victories that get you the grand prize and a few defeats knocking you out. It’s important to note that while these events will be very skill-demanding and competitive, they won’t award points and count towards the MTG esports sanctioned events.
