MTGA patch introduces duplicate protection for your collection

Do you hate opening a fifth copy of a crappy Rare? Well, from now, the chances of that happening will be much slimmer. Read up to see why.

In yet another move suspiciously mimicking main competitor Hearthstone, MTG Arena is introducing a brand new system to reduce duplicates and increase the variety of our collections in terms of Rares and Mythics.

The new system

The brand new Core Set 2021 is bringing a few new cards, but also a large selection of reprints some as new as Fabled Passage from Throne of Eldraine. There are good chances that you already own a playset of these, as they are playable in so many decks, and nothing other then the set symbol is different.

Taking this into consideration, MTGA will count newer versions of cards towards the ones you already own as long as they have the same artwork. If you get four of a kind, you won’t see another one in a store-bought booster pack until you’ve collected all other Rares and Mythics in the set.

Simply put, if you own two Fabled Passages, you’ll get a maximum of two more from Core Set 2021, and that will be it.

Caveats

There are a few things to keep in mind to avoid disappointment.

First, this new dup system only works for Rares and Mythics. You’ll keep stacking those Commons and Uncommons sky high.

Second, reprints with a new artwork are not included in the system, and the game counts them as brand new cards. But hey, at least we’ll have more pretty pictures in our collections!

Last, Limited packs will continue to drop cards at normal rates. The reasons for this are quite obvious - you need cards to play at the event, not only to add to your collection, so it would really suck to not open certain cards, just because you already own them! In fact, if you own playsets of certain cards, they are probably pretty good and you want them in your games of Limited.

All in all, this is a very nice improvement to MTG Arena and definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to collecting and saving money.
