Magic: The Gathering may just have made its biggest announcement to date, revealing all of the card sets scheduled for release in 2021. We’re talking thematic Standard sets, MTGA, remasters, a new Master set, and even fetch lands. It all looks great. From the looks of it, Magic might easily be heading to its strongest year to date.

There are so many announcements that it will be hard to list them all, so let’s not waste any time!

Kaldheim

Ever since the tease of a Viking-inspired world in Planechase, Magic fans have been asking: where are the longships and horned helmets? Well, they are in a world called Kaldheim, and we’ll be visiting it for the first time this winter.

Not much is known about this barbaric and mysterious land but the set symbol is a double-edged axe, so we can explain plenty of those and the cool warriors wielding them. God, anyone? How about snow lands?

Strixhaven

In yet another coincidence that’s just too convenient, Magic has announced Strixhaven, School of Mages. This thematic set will deal with an academy for wizards and its five schools teaching the different colors of mana to their pupils.

Now both Magic and Hearthstone have matching thematic sets about the dinosaur-infested jungles, mummy-infested desert tombs, and wizard schools full of rookie mages in training.

Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms

Wow, now we’re talking! Nevermind the absurdly long name, this is a set fans of Wizards of the Coast have been requesting for the past 20 years!

In this epic crossover between Dungeons and Dragons and Magic, planeswalkers will be able to gather parties of clerics, wizards, rogues, and warriors to defeat iconic monsters and of course, dragons. This is a proper, Standard-legal, black-bordered set, not to be confused with the silver-bordered promo card Sword of Dungeons & Dragons which was nothing more than a joke and a novel collector’s item.

Innistrad Werewolves and Innistrad Vampires

Yep, there’s more. We’re coming back to Innistrad! The absolute fan-favorite gothic horror world full of creepy castles, dangerous forests, mad angels, and of course, legendary horror monsters, is back.

Wizards claim they really wanted us to go back home to the land of Markov Manner, the Helvault, and the Ulvenwald, but couldn’t quite fit it all in one set, so we get two! One will heavily focus on the Werewolf flip cards, and the other will be all about the bloodthirsty vampires such as the mighty Olivia Voldaren.

Time Spiral Remastered

Coming right on the heels of Amonkhet Remastered, we now know the next set that’s coming back and that’s none other than the 2006 Time Spiral.

This was definitely one of Magic’s most bold and experimental sets, featuring new and original cards, reprints of older classics, and… cards from the future. This is a perfect opportunity to see even more of these, though it’s very probable to also see the absence of a few problematic cards such as Tarmogoyf.

Modern Horizons 2

And to top it all off, there will be a paper-exclusive, high-end set aimed at hardcore players only. Modern Horizons promises to bring tons of needed Modern reprints, including, get this, fetch lands, distributed in draft boosters at rare. Too good to be true?

Well, that’s an absolute avalanche of information and we will need a sec to take it all in.
