Disney+ has seen a notable drop in subscribers following some controversial updates to the streaming service.
Disney sure has some huge plans ahead, purchasing a stake in Epic Games, which will lead to some interesting collaborations, like a potential Taylor Swift concert in Fortnite, as well as a virtual theme park. But not everything is sunshine and roses, because a grand total of 1.3 million subscribers have recently left their streaming service.
Some controversial changes have made viewers unsubscribe from Disney+, but these changes don't seem to be slowing the company down one bit with their plans.
Disney+ Lost Millions Of Subscribers In Last Quarter Of 2023
During Disney's Q1 earnings call for the fiscal year 2024, a lot was revealed. While there were quite a lot of positive things to look forward to, some bad news was also revealed. Around 1.3 million people unsubscribed from the Disney streaming service after the company hiked up its price in the last quarter of 2023.
According to the information in the call, Disney+ went from 112.6 million subscribers in September 2023 down to 111.3 million in December 2023. This comes after Disney introduced new subscription prices, with the ad-free tier increasing its price from $10.99/month to $13.99/month in October 2023.
While the subscriber numbers for Disney+ have gone down, those for Hulu, also owned by the Walt Disney Company, have gone up. Disney is planning on reaching profitability with their streaming services by the end of 2024.
Not only is Disney looking to grow and expand its streaming services, but acquiring a stake in Epic Games will also increase the companies reach and will give Disney even more options for future endeavors. Sure, a virtual theme park sounds crazy right now, but it could become a huge hit. So, will Mickey Mouse in Fortnite become a reality soon? It's certainly on the cards.
