Inside Out 2 is the sequel to the first movie and will be hitting theaters on June 14, 2024. In the first installment, we got to know emotions like Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust. They all have specific roles, and together they make up Riley's inner world.
In the second movie, we'll meet new emotions such as Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment. Initially, there were plans to include another emotion, Shame, but according to the producers, it didn't fit the movie.
Inside Out 2: Shame Was Too Overwhelming
In the sequel, Riley enters her teenage years, a period marked by excitement and significant changes. Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment are all emotions that are fitting for this stage of life. And you would think Shame would also be appropriate for this phase.
However, developers Kelsey Mann and Mark Nielsen felt that the character was too heavy for the story. Mann said:
It was not fun to watch, it was not fun. It was too heavy. You know when you see a good movie and you’re like, ‘Man that was a great movie.’ You want to see it again? ‘No, not really.’ There are movies like that.
Both struggled to redeem Shame. The character made the storytelling more complicated and sometimes caused problems. According to Dr. Dacher Keltner, the question always stayed: "What are we trying to say?"
Jason Deamer, a renowned art director and character designer, sees the problem with the character as follows:
Shame is a real thing in life but not everybody goes through that. But anxiety is in all of us. It’s just better. I think it’s a more important thing to talk about than some kind of message about don’t shame yourself. It was preachy. Anxiety, you need it. It’s not 100% bad.
According to the developers, while the emotion itself was removed from the film, you can still feel the sense of Shame in it.
Let's see what everyday situations Riley will encounter this time and which emotions will be going through her mind.
