Amazon Freevee has decided to end its coming-of-age drama High School, based on the best-selling memoir by Tegan and Sara Quin, after just one season. The show, which premiered with eight episodes in October 2022, had been highly praised, but its cancellation was expected and more of a formality than a shock.

Amazon Freevee Cancels High School After One Season

High School dealt with the journey of self-discovery and identity, which is particularly complex for twin sisters going through adolescence. Set against the backdrop of '90s grunge and rave culture, the show starred TikTok creators Railey and Seazynn Gilliland as Tegan and Sara. The cast also included Cobie Smulders and Kyle Bornheimer as the twins' parents, as well as various other young actors in supporting roles.

Tegan and Sara Quin are Canadian twin sisters who form the indie pop duo known as Tegan and Sara. Born on September 19, 1980, in Calgary, Alberta, they began their musical careers in the late 1990s and have since become well-known for their unique blend of indie rock, new wave, and synthpop. Tegan and Sara are openly gay and have been active advocates for LGBTQ+ rights. They founded the Tegan and Sara Foundation in 2016 to support LGBTQ+ girls and women, focusing on economic justice, health, and representation.

Freevee Cancels Show Due To Low Completion Rates

Despite initial optimism from Freevee regarding a second season, the show's completion rate did not meet expectations, leading executives to pull the plug. According to The Hollywood Reporter, DuVall had already opened a mini-room to work on Season 2, with scripts completed, but the show ultimately faced cancellation."High School" isn't the only show Freevee has canceled recently. The platform also canceled "Primo," a coming-of-age comedy inspired by Shea Serrano's life in San Antonio, TX.

While Freevee's recent decisions have disappointed fans, the platform continues to develop other projects, such as the reported development of Margot Robbie's "The Sims" movie.
