Rings of Power Season 2: Teaser Trailer Reveals Sauron's New Disguise, War In Khazad-dûm & Sea Monsters

The first trailer for The Rings of Power Season 2 has just been released. You can watch it below, along with a scene by scene breakdown of what was shown.

The trailer shows that, if nothing else, Amazon will continue to give the show a huge budget (despite it probably not paying off for them). And if you somehow missed it, the teaser also reveals that The Rings of Power Season 2 will release on August 29.

Spoiler Alert: We've broken down the teaser trailer scene by scene below. If you want to go into the second season without any foreknowledge, stop reading now.

The Rings of Power Season 2 Teaser Trailer Analysis

Here is a breakdown of exactly what we were seeing in the trailer:

  • 00:00-00:02 We see an opening shot of Mount Doom (where we know Sauron will soon forge the One Ring).
  • 00:03-00:10 – Prince Durin IV tells his people that "an evil ancient and powerful has returned", presumably talking about Sauron.
  • 00:11-00:12 – A creature made of black tentacles begins to emerge out of water. This could just be a vision; it doesn't seem to be one of the monsters mentioned in Tolkien's writing.
  • 00:13-00:23 – Galadriel, Elrond, and a cohort of elves prepare to defend themselves in a dark and foggy location.
  • 00:24-00:34 – We see images of evil magic being performed, from flying insect-like creations, to a slivering root, as a voiceover describes how he (Sauron) "worms his way inside your mind and the rest of him slithers in". Then we see orcs advancing through the forest.
  • 00:34-00:42 – Celebrimbor sees an explosion of light and then a creature approaching him, this is presumably Sauron (disguising himself as Annatar the elf), who will deceive him into forging the Rings of Power.
  • 00:46-00:49 – We see Charlie Vickers, who played Sauron in Season 1, now looking like an elf.
  • 00:49-00:53 – Shots of Middle-earth and Galadriel riding through the forest.
  • 00:49-00:54 – Deep underwater a girl is about to be eaten by a sea monster, this might also just be another of the Queen of Numenor's visions.
  • 00:54-00:58 – The dwarves of Khazad-dûm are attacked by something.
  • 00:58-01:05 – A montage of war in various places around Middle-eart.
  • 01:05-01:06 – We see three Elven Rings of Power, Narya, Vilya and Nenya.
  • 01:06-01:07 – Durin III picks up a Mithril ring, which might suggest he is reconsidering the plan to mine for it?
  • 01:08-01:22 – Another combat montage, featuring Adar.
  • 01:23-01:28 – Surrounded by elves, it seems Annatar has been revealed as Sauron. Then he casts a kind of spell and destroys the surrounding landscape.
  • 01:28-1:43 – Pan out to reveal the title screen.

We can deduce from the trailer that The Rings of Power Season 2 will cover events up until about S.A. 1600 when the One Ring is forged. But we can also tell that this is their interpretation of events, as Khazad-dûm was not attacked before S.A. 1600, so really anything could happen.

And that was everything we've gleaned so far from the first trailer. If you think you know what the creature made of black tentacles is supposed to be, please let us know in the comments!
