Overwatch's yearly Anniversary event came to a close officially on June 9, with console and PC players able to acquire new skins, new challenges, and sprays. With the Anniversary event over, how did Overwatch do this year?

All about skins

The Overwatch Anniversary event, much like Christmas, is a time where presents are exchanged, but from Blizzard Entertainment this time, though we should omit the word presents, and use the word Lootboxes in this instance. On a serious note, Lootboxes can be purchased using real money and is a real form of gambling, one that the video game industry still fails to address to date.

The skins that came out during the anniversary event are the highlight here. Fans were delighted to finally add Masquerade Reaper to their collection, a skin that was first teased back in 2017.

Overwatch allowed players to earn Epic skins each week by completing so many games. The skins were:

  • Week 1: Carbon Fiber Sigma. (Win 9 games)
  • Week 2: Fleur de Lis Widowmaker. (Win 9 games)
  • Week 3: Masked Man McCree. (Win 9 games)

This, of course, being a nice incentive from Blizzard to get more user retention within the game itself, we'll always welcome free skins. Speaking of skins, during each Overwatch Anniversary event, Overwatch unlocks its vault to allow players to purchase skins from previous events they had missed.

Overwatch gave fans the opportunity each day to take part in various events that would usually run at different times of the year. While great, the frustrating part was if you missed a day, you'd need to wait an entire week before being able to play the mode again. This left players feeling noticeably frustrated in forums and on Reddit (though what's new there).

What would have been great for the Overwatch Anniversary event would have been a new game mode? It's great Blizzard re-open the vault to play old events, but it would have made the event that more special to have something brand new, especially if you are a new player to Overwatch.

If you're new to Overwatch and Overwatch Anniversary, you'll naturally be open to a wide range of things to play and experience something great, but note these events do not return weekly once the Anniversary event ends. You'll have to wait for the specific season to be able to play them again.

Overall, another decent event from Overwatch, however, repeating the same thing as last year but adding new skins will only go so far. This could, of course, be due to Overwatch 2 development so there might be a lack of developer support, but still, give us something to work with here.

For everything else Overwatch and much more, keep it here with EarlyGame.
