The Overwatch League season hasn’t even started yet and the community is unsure about its future. Is trouble brewing on the horizon?
What’s going on with the Overwatch League?
The Overwatch League will begin in early February and the Overwatch community as a whole is voicing some concerns. Incredibly talented players have been leaving the Overwatch esports scene for various reasons, making the fans wonder what on Earth is going on and feeling (rightfully) insecure about the future of the Overwatch League.
Notable casting talent Christopher “MonteChristo” Mykles has been one of the first to announce his departure from the Overwatch League. He noted an indifference in the direction the OWL was going in (later announcing a partnership with Cloud9).

Then, Chris “Puckett” Puckett followed suit – he won’t be returning either due to personal reasons.
Sadly, the list continues with Erik “DoA” Lonnquist, who announced his departure as his contract ended with the OWL on December 31, 2019, and will not be renewed. Auguste “Semmler” Massonnat also announced that he will be putting his 2-year partnership on hold. And lastly, Malik “Malik” Forté will also be leaving the caster talent lineup, making the talent pool incredibly thin at the moment. Fans are naturally worried with so many changes happening at once. We can only speculate that something clearly isn’t going well behind the curtains of Overwatch’s esports scene.
A silver lining
The long list of casters leaving the Overwatch League isn't all doom and gloom, though. There will be new talent joining for the 2020 season. Here is who’s been confirmed at the moment:
- Andrew “ZP” Rush
- Brennon “Bren” Hook
- Josh “Sideshow” Wilkinson
- ex-pro player Jacob “Jake” Lyon
- ex-pro player Scott “Custa” Kennedy.
This lengthy set of adjustments will take time for players and fans of the Overwatch Leagueto fully grasp. But with such a long way until the start of the season, hopefully we can all warm up to the new changes before the season starts.
What do you make of these changes? Will you be watching the Overwatch League in February? Who are you rooting for this 2020 season? We’re always interested to know!
