The Fortnite streamer and Top 10 Twitch personality will remain on the platform after refusing “life-changing money” offered by a competitive platform.
The streaming world is more competitive than ever. Gone are the days when Twitch was the only feasible option for live video game broadcasting. These days the platform has strong competitors each offering their exclusive content, such as DLive who has YouTube star PewDiePie streaming exclusively, and Microsoft-owned Mixer, that has the rights to many exclusive top streamers and esports tournaments.
Mixer has been on a talent acquisition spree recently, managing to snatch up former #1 Twitch streamer Ninja, soon followed by Shroud. After signing these two, the internet was buzzing with rumors that next in line is Fortnite pro player Imane “Pokimane” Anys.
The gaming starlet dispelled the rumors with a humorous “nothing to announce” video on her Twitter, followed by a more in-depth explanation video simply dubbed “why” on her YouTube account.
According to Pokimane, she got tempting offers by two platforms - Twitch, and one of their competitors. She decided to stick with the former who offered her “fair” conditions, but still a significantly lesser sum.
“Long story short, I decided to take less money to stay on Twitch. And when I say ‘less money’ I mean, like, the differential is more than what I have in my bank account right now.”
Wow, that’s a big differential. With a top status on Twitch, Pokimane’s estimated net worth is $3 million. If that’s the differential between the two deals she was offered, we can only speculate as to how much is written on that purple check.
Recently Twitch has been involved in some light controversy surrounding the deleting of accounts of streamers who opted to leave the platform, such as Ninja. Maybe Pokimane was concerned about her legacy as one of Twitch’s best and wanted to keep her established audience, instead of forging a new following or asking her fans to migrate to the new place. Or maybe she just likes Twitch.
In any case, she’s here to stay - it’s now written in her contract!
