Rocket League just got a big PS5 Next-Gen update, and it has brought the next generation to everyone's favorite car-football game. Let's take a look at the Rocket League next-gen upgrade on the PS5, what it means for the game, and how it improves Rocket League.
It's not just Ratchet & Clank that's been added to Rocket League on PlayStation 5 this week. We have also seen two new enhanced visual packs, each of which offer something a little different. The thing is, it has been a pretty intense couple of months for Rocket League, and the PS5 version of the game really wasn't any better than the last-gen versions. Seems like a waste, doesn't it? Well, this new Rocket League next-gen update changes that, and it's bloody good.
The next-gen PS5 Update for Rocket League is not the only thing that jumped into the game this week. Here are a couple of other PS5-specific additions, both of which came this week!
What are the Rocket League Next-Gen PS5 Update Visual Settings?
Rocket League's new Next-Gen PS5 Update brings the game up to date with its Xbox Series X|S counterpart, and brings 4K to Rocket League. It's pretty exciting stuff for PlayStation players, and certainly brings the game up-to-scruff in terms of its visual fidelity and performance on next-gen consoles. The Rocket League Next-Gen PS5 Upgrade will require you to own a 4K-compatible television, and also brings a number of new skins and decals with it. Here are the new features:
Rocket League Next-Gen PS5 Update: Quality Mode
- 4K resolution at 60 FPS with HDR
- HDR requires HDR10 compatible display and HDMI 2.0 cable or better
- 4K capable display required to experience 4K. If a 1080p display is used, the game will render at 1080p super-sampled from 4K
Rocket League Next-Gen PS5 Update: Performance Mode
- Game runs at 2688×1512 resolution (70% of full 4K) at 120 FPS with HDR
- Game UI runs in 4K
- 4K capable display required to experience 4K UHD. If a 1080p display is used, the game will render at 1080p super-sampled from 2688×1512
- HDR and 120 FPS require a compatible display, as well as Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 cable

What does the Rocket League Next-Gen PS5 Update Do?
The new next-gen performance upgrades for Rocket League on PlayStation 5 finally turns Rocket League on PS5 into the next-gen version of the game we have always wanted. Up until this moment, Rocket League on the PS5 was simply a backwards-compatible version of the PS4 game. It thus had the same fidelity and performance as Rocket League on the PS4 Pro, but was not at all "next-gen".
How does this update improve Rocket League, though? Well, running Rocket League at 120FPS will increase the smoothness and accuracy of the game. The higher fidelity graphics, the addition of 120Hz to the game, and the increased resolution, will provide players with not just a better-looking game, but a number of other benefits as well. The game will have reduced problems with motion sickness with these new features, and finally brings the game up to scruff.
Now, please keep in mind that the game still does not run at 120FPS with full-4K resolution. For that crystal-clear image, you are going to need to use the game's new Quality Mode. That's okay, because it's still going to run at 60FPS. Jeez, if that's the biggest complaint we have, though, this new Rocket League Next-Gen PS5 Update certainly hits the spot.
