Is Rocket League 2 coming in the near future? Well, several things are certainly hinting towards a Rocket League 2, or at least a new game, from Psyonix. Let's take a look at what Psyonix has been up to, and why Rocket League 2 might not be too far away. This is why Rocket League 2 could be coming quite soon...
Rocket League 2, these three words, are inspiring a larger debate within the Rocket League community. What has Psyonix been up to these last few months, and what is going on with Rocket League, a game that recently celebrated its 6th Anniversary? Let's take a look at Rocket League 2, what it could look like, and why we think that Rocket League 2 is coming sooner rather than later.
Well, whether Rocket League 2 is really coming or not, we're certainly enjoying Rocket League Season 4. Here's everything you need to know about the next few weeks of Rocket League...

Is Rocket League 2 Coming?
We believe that Rocket League 2 may be in development due to a number of different factors. Why do we believe that Rocket League 2 might be coming, you may ask? Well, there are a few points I want to make to drive this opinion home. Keep in mind, however, that absolutely nothing has been confirmed in relation to Rocket League 2, and that the game might not even be in development. However, I have four key points that I want to make: Psyonix has been purchased by Epic Games, Rocket League "Next" is a thing, Unreal Engine 3 is totally outdated, and Psyonix have to be up to... something... right?

Rocket League 2 is Coming: Psyonix Was Purchased by Epic Games
Psyonix was purchased by Epic Games, leading to Rocket League's free-to-play shift back in 2020. The shift was originally a huge success, with the game reaching its highest real-time player base in years, and launching the game back into the stratosphere with free content and a bunch of new Seasons. The problem? Well, there are three reasons why I think this is so important:
- Epic Games are going to want a real and sustainable return on this massive investment, they'll want a new game that they can release, market, and keep going for years to come. Rocket League is six years old now, so its runway may be reaching the end.
- Rocket League has seen significantly declining numbers in recent weeks and months, especially since the beginning of Season 3, and the end of RLCS X. This certainly hints that my previous statement about the game's runway reaching its end may be somewhat true.
- Wait, we're going to get to this point later, it is the last one in this article...
Rocket League 2 is Coming: Rocket League "Next" is Real
Rocket League "Next" is a project that was revealed during the Epic Games vs. Apple lawsuit, and it even has a registered domain name. That's right, during the court proceedings, Epic Games was forced to reveal all sorts of unannounced stuff, including a project code-named Rocket League "Next". It was described as some kind of "next-gen client" and that it would provide a whole new gameplay experience for Rocket League fans.
It isn't certain what Rocket League "Next" is, but it could very well be a codename for Rocket League 2, especially since its domain name is anonymously registered... that isn't something that would usually happen with a simple expansion, is it? Look, it is possible that Rocket League "Next" is something like a port of Rocket League into a new and more powerful engine, and redesigned for next-gen... but that leads us to our next point!
Rocket League 2 is Coming: Unreal Engine 3 is Old & Outdated
Rocket League runs on Unreal Engine 3, an engine that is now two versions out-of-date. Let's be real, trying to run a modern game on Unreal Engine 3 is like trying to run Cyberpunk 2077 on a Windows 7 PC – it works, but it's not really advised. Now, yes, Rocket League is more or less confirmed to be getting an Unreal Engine 5 update, as it was stated in a recent job advertisement. The thing is – Rocket League's bones are still insanely old, and it won't be native to Unreal Engine 5 even after the upgrade. Investment in a Rocket League 2 would certainly be worth it, extending the game's longevity and giving it a truly next-gen version. It's a no brainer!
Rocket League 2 is Coming: What Has Psyonix Been Doing?
Psyonix has been missing in action for a long time now, let's be real. Okay, I can almost hear the angsty question: "But, but, but... Season 3! Season 3 came out! And Season 4! What about the Summer Roadtrip Event? What about RLCS X?" I understand the question, but I will now shoot it back at you: other than a small number of bug fixes, do you think a few new decals, a couple of new car designs, and some re-released vehicles really take up the entire collective resources of a veteran game developer? Yes, they are also migrating the game to Unreal Engine 5, but surely something else is in development behind the scenes. Especially with the Epic Games acquisition, it seems unlikely that they would pool all their resources into such minor additions to what is now a now six-year-old game. They have to be working on something else!
This begs the question, what has Psyonix been doing all this time? Perhaps they are developing Rocket League 2?
