This weekend brings one of the most exciting Magic: The Gathering esports events - the Players Tour Finals will award some of the world’s best card-slingers with a prize pool of $250,000. There will be even Double Masters spoilers.

July 25, 26, and August 1 are the dates for the epic Magic: The Gathering tournament featuring the top 145 Magic players the world has to offer. At the end of the grand affair, only 16 will make the move to the 2020 Season Grand Finals.

The Format

This is a Standard tournament, so players will be able to use the most recent Core Set 2021 cards for their decks. The specifics go as follows:

Day One: Standard Constructed

  • 7 Swiss rounds, with records and match points carrying over to Day Two.
  • All matches are a best two-out-of-three games.
  • 30-minute timer for each player, each match.
  • At the conclusion of Day One, there is a cut at 12 match points to advance to Day Two.

Day Two: Standard Constructed

  • 7 Swiss rounds, leading to a Top 8 cut.
  • All matches are a best two-out-of-three games.
  • 30-minute timer for each player, each match.
  • At the conclusion of Day Two, eight players advance to the Top 8 double-elimination playoff.

Day Three: Top 8 Double-Elimination Playoff

The Prizes

The total purse of winnings is $250,000 with $10,000 going to the winner, $8k to the runner up, $7k to the bronze medalist, and so on until even the planeswalkers who rank in the bottom 77-145 slots will go home with a nice $1000 consolation prize.

In addition, all players will get a backpack full of goodies, including a playmat featuring dogs. Woof!

The Live Show

This is an online-only tournament played inside MTG Arena. The whole thing will be broadcasted live over the official Magic Twitch channel and hosted by a team of experts including Maria Bartholdi, Cedric Phillips, Riley Knight, Paul Cheon, Marshall Sutcliffe, Corey Baumeister, AliasV, Mani Davoudi, and DeQuan Watson.

As a nice little surprise to the players watching at home, a couple of preview cards from the highly-anticipated and controversial set Double Masters will be spoiled during the program.
