The WePlay! WeSave! Charity Play came to a conclusion yesterday with the last few regions electing a winner. We also saw the 3 versus 3 All-Star Match in North America.
WePlay!’s event gathered a lot of attention over the last week as it grew in popularity. Its only possible downside was the big interval between matches, but besides that, it did really well. The tournament’s last milestone of $200,000 wasn’t made possible as the amount raised was left at $187,879. The last regions to be played out were Europe, South America and the CIS/EU grand finals.
Europe
In Europe, it was Team Liquid vs. Nigma. Considering that right beforehand Nigma eliminated Team Secret, which were the top contender to win the event, Liquid weren’t supposed to be much of a challenge. The series gave us no surprises as it ended with a 3:1 in favor of Nigma.
South America
South America’s finals included Thunder Predator and NoPing e-sports. While both organizations have been rather active on the scene lately, Predator proved they’re the better squad by taking the series with a 3:0 and securing the title for their region.
EU/CIS Finals
The grand final of the event was to be decided between the EU and CIS regions. Nigma were on a hot streak and it didn’t appear to stop anytime soon, even against the CIS champions HellRaisers. Exchanging games back and forth it took the maximum amount of five games to determine the grand champion. Nigma did more than enough to deserve the title throughout the tournament.
The 3vs3 North America All-Star match
With that series, the official regional battles came to an end. There was one final game remaining though – the North American 3 vs. 3 All-Star Match. A fan vote decided the six players and they were:
- WeSave! Tango - Clinton "Fear" Loomis, Braxton "Brax" Paulson, David "Moo" Hull
- WeSave! Mango - Jingjun "Sneyking" Wu, Rasmus "MISERY" Filipsen, Johan "pieliedie" Åström
The two teams seemed fairly balanced as both included experienced veteran players who competed from the early years of Dota 2. All of the players had thematic in-game names like Corona, COVID, Distance, Wash Hands, Home and Safe. Since the game was a 3 versus 3, the mode wasn’t captain’s draft or all pick, but all random deathmatch meaning each team had 42 lives and every death meant you get a new hero. WeSave! Tango took the series 28 minutes in and proved they’re the better team.
WePlay! WeSave! Charity Play may be over, but there are more online tournaments to come. Most recently ESL announced the postponed ESL One Los Angeles Dota 2 Major will be switching to an online format.
