After the Battlefield 2042 announcement yesterday, EA has come out to confirm that Battlefield 2042 will not have a single-player campaign, nor a Battle Royale mode. Instead, it will only focus on its multiplayer campaign. Here’s all we know about it.
If you spent even just a split second on Twitter yesterday, you probably know about what went down in the realms of Battlefield yesterday. If, for some reason, you’ve been living under a rock, let’s recap everything for you:
- All Battlefield 2042 Maps Revealed
- Battlefield 2042 Gameplay Reveal Confirmed For E3
- This Is Battlefield 2042's New Battle Pass
- Leak: Battlefield 2042 Release Date
- Leaked: Battlefield Screenshots & Cover Art
Now that you’re all caught up, let’s talk about the newest Battlefield 2042 revelation.
Will Battlefield 2042 Be Single Player?
Battlefield 2042 will not feature a single player campaign, going against past Battlefield games. Don’t misunderstand, though, Battlefield 2042 will still have a story:
You still have a narrative driven world, that's something that you will see through the eyes of the specialists that we're introducing. - Daniel Berlin, Battlefield 2042 Design Director
Will Battlefield 2042 Have A Battle Royale?
Battlefield 2042 will not feature a battle royale mode. That one, though disappointing to some, is not surprising to most. If you remember correctly, Battlefield 5’s Battle Royale wasn’t the best decision that DICE has ever made and though it was promising, it didn’t deliver on the expectations that people have had. Here's what Design Director Daniel Berlin had to say:
We don't have any battle royale plan at this point, but we do have other experiences within the game that we can't talk about which we are super excited for.
Will Battlefield 2042 Be Multiplayer?
Now, that is a positive answer for once. Battlefield 2042 will be a multiplayer game only. It’ll support 128 players on PC and next-gen consoles and 64 players on last-gen consoles. If you’re the lone wolf type and are worried about this: don’t be. You have the option to play against AI bots and can do so solo. If you and your friends are new to Battlefield and want to practice before playing against real human beings, you can also play against AI bots with your squad. Again, more from the Design Director:
I think [multiplayer] is just something that enables us to really lean into what we are best at.
The rumors about Battlefield 2042 – first called Battlefield 6 – and what kind of game it would be, have been spreading like wildfire in the past months. We can’t say we’re not happy about them finally being cleared up and getting such a positive message from the game devs:
I think we do provide a multiplayer experience that no-one else really does with the cutting edge technology and all the modern hardware to vehicles, to specialists and the dynamic world. In regards to free-to-play, I mean, we've done this in the past, we've got Battlefield Heroes, we had Battlefield Play for Free as well - so we've dipped our toe into this space. And it's exciting for us to see what the future holds here. But we don't have anything particularly to announce today - our focus right now is to make sure that 2042 comes together and really is the best game it can possibly be.
What's the Battlefield 2042 Release Date?
Battlefield 2042 will release on October 22, 2021, and will release on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One. Which we've already mentioned. If this is news to you, then you didn't read the part above properly. Shame on you.
EarlyGame now has its dedicated Battlefield section and is ready to keep you up to date on a daily basis. You might want to stick around for that... and when I say might, I mean definitely.
